Hi, it’s Jennifer Jackson from Stratus Admissions. You have a solid GRE and it’s great to have McKinsey on your resume even if it’s only a contract position. I’m only giving you a 5% chance of being admitted to Stern because of your lack of work experience. With an average of 4-5 years, even two years is on the low side although I’ve seen people with very high stats overcome that obstacle. I know this is a really tough year as far as layoffs and uncertainty with so many organizations, and I do think that adcoms will be fairly forgiving of people’s circumstances (i.e. being unemployed), but that in addition to only working for one year is very likely to be a bridge too far, at least for the top programs you mention. There are probably many lower-tier programs that are less selective who have different ideas on that. My best advice to you would be to continue looking for a job and just get more work experience under your belt before applying. It’s OK if it’s not the industry you want to be in. You can valuable skills in a lot of different industries and functions. I wish you lots of luck!
