I’m a product manager at a Fortune 100 company and I dance professionally on the side. I also teach dance to kids and adults. I run a career-based podcast called “Style, Not Fashion”. I went to one of the best business schools in the Northeast majoring in Marketing, and minoring in French- I also studied abroad in FR.
My product manager job is a contract- mention this? I am also a first-generation college student. – I am on the BUSINESS side of fashion. I was never an arts student. – I have lived very close to Harvard my whole life. I was thinking this might give me some type of home-field advantage. Do they want to see their community represented in their school?

Hi Ms. Ballerina, So coming from a dance background myself, I couldn’t resist commenting on your profile. I know full well that to have achieved the level that you have in the dance world you have to have demonstrated serious dedication and grit. But in addition you have such a great breadth of interesting strands to your story – a marketing degree and a role with a Fortune 100 which showcases some commercial understanding (I don’t see too much of an issue in the fact that it is a contract position), a podcast, choreography…the list goes on. That said, I can see why you might be struggling to pin down your goals and also wondering how to combine all those wonderful stands into a cohesive …
That said, I can see why you might be struggling to pin down your goals and also wondering how to combine all those wonderful stands into a cohesive narrative. This is going to be key for your application to any b-school, let alone the super-competitive ones. Honestly, I think the first step is to get an actual GRE test under your belt so you have an idea of what schools will genuinely be achievable. You are off to a good start with the strong GPA so I hope you can back that up by a strong test performance, but getting it done now will give you time for retakes if needed. I think the schools will love your enthusiasm for life (honestly, that comes through even in the snapshot you’ve given here) as well as your entrepreneurial potential. But you need to take a period of self-reflection to narrow your lens and do your research, so that your passions present genuine career options, not a scattered approach. If you can do that, then even the top schools are possible – they will like your first-generation story and I hope, your diversity of interests. Go for it!
