Hi Ms. Health Equity Entrepreneur, Your work is admirable! This is Debbie Choy from mbaMission. Having worked in the healthcare industry myself, I recognize that your clinical background will be very valuable in your post MBA goals. That said, HBS will want to know why MBA? Especially given that you’re progressing so well in your career. Why now? what specific skills and knowledge you are seeking at HBS that will help you achieve your future goals. As you put your app together, be sure to clearly articulate this. Another area of concern is your academic track record. For HBS, a competitive GMAT score would be 730+, especially given your soft undergrad GPA. Also, given your non-traditional background, do consider taking some Quant or business classes to show MBA readiness and also show that you have the academic capabilities to do well at business school. My estimate of your odds are based on GMAT score of 720, but if you increase your GMAT score, your chances will also improve. Ms. Health Equity Entrepreneur – Thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
First, you will need a really strong GMAT or GRE to balance out your softer undergrad performance. You might also consider taking an additional quantitative course to demonstrate that you are ready for the rigor of a top business school program.
I suspect that HBS doesn’t see a lot of nurses in their applicant pool so your profession will stand out. You will need to be more crisp with your goals and use your essay to share the motivations behind your aspirations. HBS has ~10% acceptance rate. The limited information in your profile doesn’t offer much insight into your leadership skills which is something they will be looking for.
If you absolutely …
If you absolutely want to go to business school, I would suggest that you expand your school list to include other programs that are strong in healthcare and innovation – Wharton, Michigan Ross, Duke Fuqua, and UCLA Anderson come to mind.
Wishing you all the best!
