We asked that question of Sandy Kreisberg, founder of HBSGuru.com, a leading MBA admissions consultant and reader of admission tea leaves at Harvard Business School and other highly selective schools. In the above video, he outlines four major things to avoid. But the biggest takeaway is “Do No Harm.” Essays, Kreisberg believes, don’t get people into highly ranked MBA programs. They more often than not get people rejected, even when everything else in your application from your GPA and test scores to your work experience lines up. “Applying to an MBA program should be a social experience,” he says, inviting candidates to reach out to alums, current students and others in the know. Kreisberg also advises candidates not to allow “perfection” to get in the way of what would be perfectly “adequate” in an application.
