2024 MBA Headlines: A School-By-School Collection Of News

The headlines rarely capture a year’s most important news. In April of 1975, broadcasters were wrestling with the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. That same month, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in an Albuquerque garage. A year later, as America prepared to mark its bicentennial, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne were launching Apple to little fanfare. Together, these firms ushered in the personal computer era – and represent over $7.3 trillion dollars in combined market cap.

In another 50 years, 2024 won’t be remembered for Hurricane Helene’s destruction, Syria’s collapse, Diddy’s arrest, or Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. Fact is, there will be equally polarizing American elections ahead. Chances are, the talking heads won’t be wagging about misinformation, lawfare, or inflation either. Instead, the real news will be rooted in an anonymous incubator startup or quiet laboratory breakthrough that was set in motion during 2024 – ones that will redefine what’s possible in the 21st century.

A FLURRY OF DEVELOPMENTS

In business education, 2024 will be remembered as the year when Artificial Intelligence became a cornerstone of the curriculum. ESSEC Business School established a partnership with OpenAI, while business programs at Arizona State, Clemson, and the University of Rochester rolled out degrees in the field. IMD Business School, Johns Hopkins University and the Wharton School even revamped their MBA programing to better integrate AI. At the same time, sustainability remained all the rage in 2024, as programs like EDHEC Business School and the University of Michigan’s Ross School doubled down on their investments there.

Indeed, EDHEC Business School didn’t rest on its laurels in 2024. It launched an online MBA. New York University’s Stern School, ESADE Business School, IE Business School, and UC Riverside opened new buildings or campuses. By the same token, the University of Texas’ McCombs School and Rice University’s Jones Graduate School broke ground on new buildings – all while Vanderbilt University’s Owen School laid out plans to colonize Florida. When it comes to innovations, Indiana University’s Kelley School set up its full-time MBA program so that its second year can be taken online. All the while, the University of Illinois’ Gies College and the University of California at Davis continued to pad their lead as the leader in stackable credentials.

Alas, the year also featured plenty of comings-and-goings. Business school deans submitted their resignations at the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School, UCLA’s Anderson School, New York University’s Stern School, Southern Methodist University’s Cox School, and Queen’s University’s Smith School. The biggest news of all: David Levin, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, took the reins as president of Stanford University. In contrast, several business schools hired new deans, including Cambridge, IMD, Michigan State, University of Illinois, University of Miami, TCU, Hult, Ivey, Utah, South Florida, Lehigh, and Washington State. Virginie Fougea, INSEAD’s executive director who has devoted nearly 30 years to the school, stepped into a new role in 2024. At Stanford GSB, alum Erin Nixon was hired to serve as the school’s assistant dean for admissions and financial aid.

It was also a year of highs-and-lows. Applications rose as pay and placement fell. Purdue University’s Daniels School snagged a $100-million-dollar commitment, while Boston University’s Questrom School received $51 million dollars to launch the Ravi K. Mehrotra Institute for Business. That said, Harvard Business School continued to deal with the fallout from Francesca Gino’s liberties with research, where the back-and-forth leaves neither party looking particularly noble. Further south, the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Flagler School made the legal docket for secretly recording a faculty member’s classes (and later not renewing his contract). In Ohio, Senator-elect Bernie Moreno’s bio ‘mistakenly’ listed him as an MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School. Call it stolen valor. Let’s face it: if you’re going to lie about your credentials in politics, use an in-state school at minimum.
