Instructor: Otto Scharmer

Credentials: The course will be led by Otto Scharmer, a senior lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. A Ph.D. from Germany’s Witten-Herdecke University, Scharmer heads the MIT IDEAS program, which is designed to help intellectual, government, and business leaders create social innovation in their communities. He is best known for the book TheoryU: Leading the Future As It Emerges, which introduces the concepts of sensing, connecting and active learning into both personal growth and social transformation. His most recent book, Leading From the Emerging Future: From Ego-system to Eco-system Economies was published in 2008. Schramer will be assisted in the course by several MIT instructors and graduates.

Graded: Students will receive a certificate for completing their assignments and abiding by the honor code.

Description: Based on the framework outlined in TheoryU, this course focuses on how to create social and business innovation through reflection, raising consciousness, learning new tools, and practicing them in the larger world. By connecting students to their emerging selves, this course helps them envision a world based more on fairness and mindfulness than self-interest. Even more, it challenges them to take actions that bring this vision to life. As part of the course, participants will join live streamed lectures along with receiving coaching from their peers.
