Ty is a 30-year-old social impact and operations manager for City Year, the education nonprofit dedicated to helping students and schools succeed. An avid jazz fan and trumpet player, he wants an MBA to transition into management consulting for the social sector.
Before moving into the social impact space, Ty achieved success as an international musician and entertainer. He performed onboard cruise ships, visiting and leading tours in 35+ countries for 18 months. He now leads a team and partnership to serve systemically disadvantaged students.
With a 3.9 GPA in music education and a 710 GMAT score, he is targeting the MBA programs at Yale School of Management, the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
The big question? Is a 710 GMAT good enough for a white male who is 30 years of age? In this episode of Friday’s With Sandy, HBSGuru.com Founder Sandy Kreisberg addresses that question, grills Ty in a mock admissions interview, and then sets the odds for his target school.
