When I first decided to pursue an MBA, I knew I had some significant weaknesses in my application. I had struggled with the GMAT, had gaps in my work experience, and came from a professional background that was not particularly analytical or quantitative. I knew I needed someone who could help me not only navigate the application process, but also figure out how to present my background in the strongest possible way. Working with Harold ended up being one of the best decisions I made during my MBA journey.

From the beginning, Harold helped me recognize that my background had a compelling story to tell. We spent time brainstorming my personal and professional experiences and identifying the themes that could differentiate my application. He also recommended that I switch from the GMAT to the GRE based on my learning style, connected me with tutors to help me prepare, and suggested additional courses and resources that helped strengthen the quantitative side of my profile.

I first met Jessica on a 30 minute call to assess my application to b-school. I had been waffling for the whole year on whether I should apply to school and there were only ~8 weeks until round 2 deadlines. Working together wasn’t on the table as all of her slots for that cycle were filled. Though she had little to gain from our call, I found her to be forthcoming, honest, and extremely knowledgeable. When one of her applicants decided to defer and a spot opened up, I jumped at the chance to work with her.

Though I had an extremely tight schedule and a mountain of work to do, Jessica was never daunted. She was truthful about how much work I had to do, but encouraging and confident that I could do it. Her experience and advice saved me countless hours of effort(e.g. should I take the GMAT or GRE? now that I have my GRE score, is it good enough or should I retake it or work on my essays more? Who should my recommenders be?). She helped me focus my efforts on the parts of my application that needed it the most. Throughout the flurry of essay edits, Jessica was extremely responsive (more than she needed to be) and I found her suggestions for me to be thoughtful and grounded in her years of experience of working with applicants. In fact, one of my recommenders mentioned that he strongly considered working with Jessica on his own applications (and one his close friends from b-school had and loved working with her). Truly, no question of mine was too big or too small for her and she treated them all with a distinct level of care.

Jessica helped me approach a very unstructured challenge (that I wasn’t very prepared for) with a modicum of efficiency and confidence. Without her, I don’t think I’d be gearing up to head to Columbia for business school this year. I am walking away from the experience of working with her more confident in myself and my own story and journey. I’d recommend Jessica to everyone and anyone.

I worked with Harold on my applications to Harvard Business School, Wharton, and MIT Sloan. Separately, I completed my applications to Chicago Booth and Kellogg without consulting support. I did not receive an interview from any of the three schools where Harold advised me, while I was admitted to both Booth and Kellogg with more than $100,000 in scholarship funding.

Admissions outcomes are inherently unpredictable, and I do not believe it would be fair to evaluate a consultant solely on results. That said, when I compared the five applications, I felt that some of the strategic guidance I received made it harder for me to present the most distinctive and authentic version of my candidacy.

I entered the process with what I believed was a competitive academic and professional profile: a GRE score in the high 330s, a GPA of approximately 3.95 that placed me at top of my class, and a record as a top performer at an MBB firm. Before joining MBB, I had also accumulated several meaningful leadership and extracurricular experiences. These included coaching my national team in an academic Olympiad and leading it to its highest-ever international finish, as well as achieving significant success at the global level in that Olympiad myself. I had also worked with startups and spent substantial time mentoring and coaching others. I had also been a founding member of a local NGO that supported food, clothing, and shelter for more than 5,000 people.

One of Harold’s recommendations was not to discuss my pre-MBB experiences at length because they would be more than three years old by the time I matriculated. His take was that admissions applications should always be forward looking and put great emphasis on recent work and future ambitions. Following that advice, the three applications we developed together focused primarily on my performance and progression at my MBB firm. Although that was an important part of my profile, I ultimately felt that this approach made my candidacy appear more conventional and did not fully capture the experiences that most clearly differentiated me.

There were several other recommendations that I followed in the applications we completed together but chose not to follow when preparing my Booth and Kellogg applications independently. The latter two applications felt more personal, distinctive, and representative of my full story. Given my academic credentials, extracurricular record, and performance at MBB, I was particularly surprised not to receive an interview from Wharton. Of course, it is impossible to know precisely why one application succeeds and another does not, but the contrast in both the application strategies and the eventual outcomes influenced my assessment of the engagement.

On a personal level, however, Harold was consistently approachable, responsive, and flexible. He worked around the unpredictability of my consulting schedule and was accommodating when my working hours changed. He also continued to check in after I received my results, including my Booth and Kellogg admissions, even though he had not advised me on those applications. After my Wharton rejection, he went above and beyond by arranging a complimentary ding analysis with another mbaMission consultant. I genuinely appreciated the care, professionalism, and personal support he showed throughout the process and afterward.

Overall, my experience was mixed. Harold was accessible, supportive, and personally invested in my outcome, and I remain grateful for the ways in which he went beyond the formal scope of the engagement. However, I believe that some of the positioning and application strategy advice I received ultimately weakened, rather than strengthened, the presentation of my candidacy. For that reason, I would rate the experience three stars.

I cannot recommend Susan highly enough. She was in my corner every step of the way and consistently went above and beyond what I expected from an admissions consultant.

She helped me with everything from identifying schools and exploring potential career paths at the beginning of the process to navigating final decisions and, once I was admitted, getting into the right mindset to actually begin business school.

Ultimately, I was admitted to three of the four T15 programs I applied to and will be attending with a significant scholarship, and I KNOW that would not have been the outcome without her guidance.

Susan is also a rare combination of direct and comforting. I always trusted her to be completely honest with me and tell me what I needed to hear, but whenever I came to her convinced that something was a problem, she somehow had a solution and a path forward. She was equal parts advisor, coach, cheerleader, and, occasionally, big sister/mom, all while being an incredibly sharp businesswoman who knows this process inside and out.

I am incredibly grateful for Susan’s guidance, patience, and belief in me and would recommend her without hesitation to anyone applying to business school.

Katy was a huge help preparing me for both the group and one-on-one components of my Wharton interview. He helped me extract my strengths to weave a strong foundation, while identifying areas to improve as I went along. I did five GMAT attempts and never hit the score I was aiming for, so when I started working with Jen I had pretty much written off my chances at Oxford, Cambridge, and LBS. Jen made it clear from the start that the GMAT is only one part of the application and she pushed me to reflect on who I am and what my strengths are. The early calls were spent figuring that out: my background, my strengths, what I genuinely connected with at each school. She was good at pulling that out of me even when I could not articulate it myself. From there we worked through the essays and resume together, iterating a lot and ensuring that each of the applications was tailored to each school. We had an interview prep call before each one with a full mock and a rundown of what to expect. The aim was to make sure I was representing myself in each interview and staying natural. Ultimately, I got into all three schools with a scholarship at one, and I would never have done it without Jen’s help and dedication to her clients. I can’t recommend Jen enough, especially if you’re targeting UK schools.

While I did not formally work with Jessica during my MBA application process, she had a meaningful impact on my journey nonetheless.
